Living Room Remodel on a Budget

“Oh the joys of being a homeowner” is typically said after a furriness stops working on the coldest day of the year.  But today, I am excited to share what a joy it really is to own a home – to create it into something you worked so hard for!!

When we moved in almost two years ago we had a long list of projects ahead of us.  Matt is all about curb appeal so he tackled the outside of the house and landscaping first.  After our wedding in September, it was fair game for my interior projects (YAY!!!) starting with the living room!!  New hardwood floors and a fresh coat of light gray paint completely changed the look of this room and we LOVE it!!

Before & After

I am going to take you through this whole project!! And yes, we did the work ourselves!! We started by ripping up the carpet and pulling all of the thousands of staples (probably the worst part of it all).  We removed the doors leading to the bedrooms and painted the walls Grayish by HGTV Sherwin Williams from Lowes.  In my opinion it is the perfect gray, it is hard to find one without too many blue or green tones!! We used a generic semigloss white on all the trim.  The floor we chose is a Solid Bamboo Hazelnut Color from Lumbar Liquidators.  We LOVE the dark wood.  It is so rich and classic looking.  The light color and dark floor make the room feel huge!

We were so lucky to have our friends help us install the floor! It took longer than it would’ve to hire it, but we felt it was worth saving the money!!  We were advised to NOT get the click flooring.  So, our wood is held down by glue and nails.

Once the floor was in I had a small budget to make some decor updates, so I had to choose wisely!! I have been wanting a white couch for so long!! Obviously, dreaming of a Pottery Barn White Linen Couch, but this adorable hammy down is perfect for right now!! Wayfair also has some great affordable options!!

The coffee table we got at a really affordable price from Joss and Main.  Originally, we bought a plain taupe rug, but I just didn’t love it in this space.  So, back to the store it went and I ordered this one online.  I love how this blue and white rug really pops against the dark hardwood and perfectly matches the aesthetic I want for this room! Clean and Crisp! I found the rug at Joss and Main as well, it is a exact duplicate from a Lulu and Georgia but less than half the price – SCORE!!!  This rug is the 5’2 x 7’6 size and it is under $100 right now!!

My big beach picture is my all time budget friendly find and I am SO proud of it!!! So, I have been obsessed with Gray Malin for years, I love love love his work and I own his Beaches book.  I have always wanted one of his prints, however, they weren’t in my budget this time:(  So, I began searching for other beach pictures.  Target has a really pretty canvas, but I wanted something framed.  Then I came across this beautiful ocean print on Etsy and was ONLY $7.43.  It is a high quality photo and after purchase you instantly download and save to your computer! I then sent it off to my local photo shop to get printed!!  The frame was inexpensive from Hobby Lobby but not available online. So here is a very similar white frame from Amazon.

All of the furniture and most of the accents I already owned and I just moved then around the room.  I also updated pictures, things like that to give the room a fresh look.  The lamps were a Christmas gift and they are sooo adorable.  They add a little modern flare and match the coffee table perfectly.

The dinning room didn’t need much updating.  It all stayed the same, I just added these fun blue tie-dye art pieces!!  They bring the blue and white into the dinning room and freshened up the space big time!!!

We are so happy with the changes and this is proof you can update your space without breaking the bank!! A little imagination and time to search for products will give you a great end result!!  I am a huge believer in investing in some furniture pieces like couches, dinning tables, and buffets but keeping the other details and decor inexpensive.  I love changing my decor out and don’t feel bad about it when it is inexpensive.  Wayfair, Joss and Main, Homegoods, and Target are my favorite places to find trendy decor!!  I have tons of  home design and decor Pinterest boards (go follow me) with all different styles and colors if you need some inspiration!!:)  Comment below with your favorite part of the room remodel, I want to hear your imput!!!
